In 1997, Sugiwati Maria Ndolu (Ibu Sugi) embarked on a journey that would change her life and become a remarkable chapter in the history of Atlas Pearls. At just 20 years old, Sugi was leaving behind her family in Kupang, stepping onto a boat that carried not only equipment and supplies but also the hopes and dreams of a pearl farming endeavor that had barely begun. It was a journey into the unknown, to a place few had ever heard of - Alyui Bay, deep in the remote reaches of West Papua.

Mutiara Kids
Our Mutiara Kids attendees in Alor have had a busy few months. Back in June, while undertaking a beach clean, they collected 3 large sacks worth of trash that had washed up on the coastline of Moru Village. The kids noticed that amongst the trash were lots of flip-flops. Flip-flops are common; they’re often forgotten on beaches or washed away while people are wading in the shallows.

In Indonesia the women-led organisation Perfect Fit is leading the way and Atlas pearls is proud to support their mission.

Empowering Indigenous Artisans
In many remote indigenous communities, limited access to education, resources and markets presents significant challenges to economic opportunity, often exacerbating cycles of poverty and marginalisation. Ayeivi, or "Beautiful Kawe” is a program aimed at empowering local artisans by providing a point of sale for locally made handicrafts,facilitating the purchase of tools and findings with profits from sales, and supporting makers with branding and marketing material and strategy.
