PATHWAYS

Community Development

Community development at Atlas Pearls is grounded in long-term relationships with the villages and coastal communities connected to our operations. Across our sites, support is often practical, local and responsive to community priorities, ranging from infrastructure and facility assistance to donations, event participation and recognition of traditional leadership.

In remote communities, small contributions can make a meaningful difference. Support such as fuel, building materials, clothing, toys, sporting equipment or assistance with shared facilities can help address immediate needs, strengthen socialĀ

participation and support village life. Atlas Pearls also contributes to community and cultural events, recognising that strong relationships are built through presence, respect and ongoing engagement.

This pathway also includes support for community identity and heritage. In some locations, Atlas Pearls contributes to initiatives that help preserve local language, oral histories and cultural knowledge, recognising the importance of intergenerational learning and the role of culture in community resilience.

Community development activities vary across locations and are shaped by local relationships, village priorities and site-level engagement. While each contribution may be modest on its own, together these activities help strengthen community participation, improve access to shared facilities and support the social fabric of village life.

Atlas Pearls is strengthening how community contributions are recorded across sites to support more consistent reporting.

Impact Project: Language Preservation

Language plays a central role in identity, learning and community wellbeing. In many of the remote regions where Atlas Pearls operates, communities are linguistically rich, with local and Indigenous languages spoken alongside Bahasa Indonesia. These languages carry generations of knowledge, cultural practices, oral histories and connections to place.

As education, employment and daily life increasingly take place in national and global languages, many young people have fewer opportunities to learn and use the languages spoken by their parents and grandparents. Supporting multilingual learning means creating space for both: helping young people build language skills for education and employment, while also valuing and preserving the mother languages that connect them to culture, family and community.

Atlas Pearls supports language preservation through locally led documentation and storytelling initiatives. In Alor, students have been encouraged to record traditional stories, local myths and family histories in Indigenous languages alongside Bahasa Indonesia, helping preserve oral traditions while building literacy, creative writing and pride in local culture. The program also creates opportunities for young people to work with elders and community knowledge holders, strengthening intergenerational learning.

In Raja Ampat, Atlas Pearls has supported the documentation of the Kawe mother language, Gelei Ayei, in collaboration with Kawe Elder Petrus Gimlah. What began as a dictionary project has expanded into illustrated vocabulary builder books designed to support early learning and continued use of the language by younger generations.

Together, these initiatives reflect a broader commitment to cultural continuity and inclusive community development. Through language preservation, storytelling and multilingual learning, Atlas Pearls helps communities celebrate cultural identity while supporting young people to participate confidently in a changing world.
