PATHWAYS

Conscious Consumption

Conscious consumption is about understanding the materials we use, reducing unnecessary resource use, & finding practical ways to extend the life of materials across our operations. For Atlas Pearls, this includes farming materials, vessel & site supplies, packaging, office materials, & the inputs used to support pearl production, processing & distribution.

Atlas Pearls is building a clearer baseline for material use across the business. This supports decision-making on material efficiency, recycled and renewable inputs, packaging design, and opportunities to reuse or recover materials before they become waste.

Materials management is closely connected to both waste reduction and operational efficiency. In our remote operating locations, every material brought to site has a transport, storage and end-of-life consideration. Improving how materials are selected, used, maintained and recovered can help reduce environmental impacts while also supporting more resilient operations.

Our current approach focuses on practical actions already embedded in the business, including reusing farming materials where safe and appropriate, donating retired oyster panels and ropes for local aquaculture or fishing uses, improving waste segregation, and reviewing packaging choices where opportunities exist.

Formal tracking of total material inputs, recycled or renewable content, and packaging recovery is still developing. Establishing this baseline is important in identifying where material efficiency initiatives can have the greatest impact.
